Our Resolution

On the first day of the Monshu Accession Ceremony, I, as new head Priest of Hongwanji, spoke about “A Way of Living as a Nembutsu Follower” and how those who have received the heart of Amida Tathagata’s profound wisdom and great compassion should live in our society. Today I hope with all my heart the following four resolutions will help you understand how to live a life of Nembutsu.

Our Resolution

Resolution #1:
Like The Buddha, I will change my former ways and strive to be calm, peaceful, friendly, outgoing and always use kind words.
Resolution #2:
Like The Buddha, I will always strive to be kind and understanding in both thought and deed and not be driven by greed, anger and ignorance.
  Resolution #3:
Like The Buddha, I will put away conceit and self-importance and truthfully and compassionately share joy and sorrow with others.
Resolution #4:
Like The Buddha, I will work diligently every day and devote my life to the benefit of others.
My particular wish today is that our school and university students and all young people who are estranged from religion, will, from time to time, read these resolutions, even though they may not be familiar with Jodo Shinshu and Buddhism and come to understand their message and meaning. I also wish we never forget that it is our mission to walk the path of reciting the Nembutsu and transmit the Jodo Shinshu teachings we so lovingly inherited from our predecessors.
* This is not an official translation by the Hongwanji but my personal project intended for both my personal use and to enable me to share the joy of the   Nembutsu with others.
